Acidothermus cellulolyticus

Thermotolerant cellulolytic organism

Lineage: Bacteria[22995]; Actinobacteria[2381]; Actinobacteria[2120]; Acidothermales[1]; Acidothermaceae[1]; Acidothermus[1]; Acidothermus cellulolyticus[1]
Acidothermus cellulolyticus. This organism is a thermotolerant cellulolytic actinomycete that was originally isolated from an acidic hot spring in Yellowstone National Park. A number of thermostable endoglucanases are produced by this organism, which are useful for degrading cellulose in the production of ethanol as a biofuel. An endoglucanase has been patented and is being studied.
