The star-nosed mole (Condylura cristata) is a small insectivorous mammal native to eastern North America. The animal is named for the 22 finger-like appendages that encircle its nostrils. This animal excavates extensive burrows in its search for food but, unlike most species of mole, also feeds in ponds and streams.
