What's a GeneRIF?

Crystal structures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Pan2 in complex with RNA show that, surprisingly, Pan2 does not form canonical base-specific contacts. Instead, it recognizes the intrinsic stacked, helical conformation of poly(A) RNA.
Title: The intrinsic structure of poly(A) RNA determines the specificity of Pan2 and Caf1 deadenylases.
The exonuclease subunit Pan2 does not bind RNA by itself, but binds to an asymmetric Pan3 homodimer via an extensive, high-affinity interaction.

PAN2 and PAN3 are not required for mRNA poly(A) tail length control during de novo synthesis but may act in conjuction with Pab1p at a later stage in mRNA metabolism.
