Summary
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to a subfamily of FAM213A/selenoprotein U (SelU), within a peroxiredoxin-like FAM213 superfamily. SelU is unusual in that it has restricted phylogenetic distribution in vertebrates, such as in chicken and fish. Other vertebrate members of this family, including mammals, contain cysteine-containing homologues. SelU proteins contain UxxC (U for selenocysteine and C for cysteine) motif in place of the catalytic CxxC motif found in cysteine-containing homologues. The latter function as redox regulatory proteins, suggesting a similar role for SelU proteins. Like majority of selenoproteins, SelU contains a single selenocysteine (Sec) residue encoded by the UGA codon, which normally signals translation termination. The 3' UTRs of selenoprotein mRNAs in vertebrates contain a conserved stem-loop structure, designated the Sec insertion sequence (SECIS) element, that is necessary for the recognition of UGA as a Sec codon, rather than as a stop signal. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2017]

RefSeqs maintained independently of Annotated Genomes

These reference sequences exist independently of genome builds. Explain

These reference sequences are curated independently of the genome annotation cycle, so their versions may not match the RefSeq versions in the current genome build. Identify version mismatches by comparing the version of the RefSeq in this section to the one reported in Genomic regions, transcripts, and products above.
