What's a GeneRIF?
  1. We mutagenized the cloned Salmonella flhA gene for the 692 amino acid FlhA, changing a single, conserved amino acid in the 68-amino acid FHIPEP region. Fifty-two mutations at 30 positions mostly led to loss of motility and total disappearance of microscopically visible flagella.

  2. These results along with further mutation analyses suggest that a dynamic domain motion of FlhA(C) (the cytoplasmic domain of FlhA) is essential for protein export.

  3. The authors suggest that FlhA(C) not only forms part of the docking platform for the FliH-FliI-FliJ-export substrate complex but also is directly involved in the translocation of the export substrate of the growing flagellar structure.
