In Drosophila, Piwi-piRNA complexes associate with nascent TE transcripts to drive heterochromatin formation and TE repression. However, previous studies have shown that Piwi also associates with large amounts of mRNAs, raising the question of how Piwi discriminates between mRNAs and TEs.
