Expression patterns of key miRNAs in end-stage ADPKD kidneys

(Submitter supplied) To investigate altered expression patterns of key miRNAs in end-stage ADPKD kidneys, a miRNA microarray analysis was performed using non-ADPKD and ADPKD kidney tissue samples. As a result, total 19 miRNAs were significantly changed in the ADPKD samples compared with non-ADPKD samples. Among these miRNAs, the expression level of the miR-192 family including miR-192 and miR-194 were significantly downregulated in ADPKD.

Mesenchymal stem cells use extracellular vesicles to outsource mitophagy and shuttle micro RNAs

(Submitter supplied) Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and macrophages are fundamental components of the stem cell niche and function coordinately to regulate hematopoietic stem cell self-renewal and mobilization. Recent studies indicate that mitophagy and healthy mitochondrial function are critical to the survival of stem cells but how these processes are regulated in MSCs is unknown. Here we show that MSCs manage intracellular oxidative stress by targeting depolarized mitochondria to the plasma membrane via arrestin domain-containing protein 1-mediated microvesicles , which are then engulfed and re-utilized via a process involving fusion by macrophages resulting in enhanced bio-energetics. more...

Prefrontal cortex microRNA expression profiling in major depression

(Submitter supplied) To gain insight into the potential role of miRNA in major depressive disorder, in this study we assessed global expression of miRNAs in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) of depressed individuals in comparison to psychiatrically healthy controls. Our screening pointed to miR-1202, a miRNA specific to primates and enriched in the human brain. We validated our findings using quantitative real-time PCR and identified target genes of the differentially expressed miRNAs using bioinformatics analysis. more...
