Hypotensive major health effect of Rubus ulmifolius Schott. and Artemisia campestris L. highlighted by nutrigenomic and cardiovascular studies

(Submitter supplied) To evaluate the antihypertensive effect of Artemisia campestris and Rubus ulmifolius, we conducted a nutrigenomic analysis to examine the changes induced by the administration of the aqueous extracts of these plants on gene expression in mice. Cardiovascular effects were discussed together with antitumoral, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and eating behavior effects.

Expression profile of primary murine astrocyte-enriched cultures (AEC) exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation

(Submitter supplied) Microarray analysis was used to identify genes that fluctuated by oxygen-glucose deprivation of mouse astrocytes. Astrocyte-enriched cultures were generated from mixed glial cultures of mice and compared to control samples with 15 hours of oxygen-glucose deprivation. The results showed that 173 genes were upregulated with Fold change >10, P < 0.05. Both Nr4a1 and Nr4a3, which is an orphan nuclear receptor subfamily and known as an immediate early gene, were upregulated.

Hepatic thyroid hormone signalling modulates glucose homeostasis through the regulation of GLP-1 production via bile acid-mediated FXR antagonism

(Submitter supplied) A greater understanding of the glucose homeostasis mediated by glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) will facilitate the development of novel glucose-lowering treatments. Here we show that improved glucose metabolism in hypothyroid mice after treatment of T3, the active form of thyroid hormone (TH), is accompanied with increased GLP-1 production and insulin secretion. Treatment of a GLP-1 receptor antagonist is able to attenuate the observed T3 effect on insulin and glucose levels, suggesting that GLP-1 is critically involved in the regulation of glucose homeostasis by T3. more...
