NCBI Modular Workshops

Half-day workshops on NCBI tools held on the NIH campus or at selected universities or government sites throughout the US.

Program Overview

NCBI now offers a series of modular workshops on related set of NCBI resources. Each module consists of a 3-hour largely hands-on session emphasizing a different set of NCBI resources. Each session uses specific examples to highlight important features of the resources and tools under study and to demonstrate how to accomplish common tasks.

We currently offer the following modules.

  1. Navigating NCBI Molecular Data Using the Integrated Entrez System and BLAST
  2. A Practical Guide to NCBI BLAST
  3. Accessing Genomes, Assemblies and Annotation Products
  4. Accessing NCBI Human Variation and Medical Genetics Resources
  5. Exploring Gene Expression Information at the NCBI
  6. Principles of PubChem
  7. EDirect: Command Line Access to NCBI’s Biomolecular Databases
  8. Practical Bioinformatics for the Clinic

Each session is largely hands-on and is presented in one computer classroom where the instructor will present a specific example using the live NCBI web site followed by a period of individual practice on related problems. Detailed handouts for each session will provide step-by-step instructions and additional information about each example. Each session will also provide opportunities for participants to provide comments and suggestions on NCBI services.
