c-Silica exposure causes macrophage recruitment/destruction cycles in the lymphatic system, leading to chronic stimulation of T-cells. Helper T-cells stimulate production of B-cells, which leads to increased production of autoantibodies. Both T-responder and T-regulator cells are also stimulated; however, T-regulator cells are lost from the fraction due to Fas-mediated apoptosis. This causes an imbalance in the CD4+25+ cell fraction. Together with increased production of autoantibodies, this imbalance leads to dysregulation of autoimmunity, promoting and/or accelerating autoimmune disease development triggered by another factor (e.g., genetic predisposition or other chemical exposure).

Elements of a system for brain interfacing. (A) Implanted components include an electrode or electrode array, lead wire or lead cable, and either a percutaneous connection or an implanted electronics package. The implanted electronics may be a pulse generator for instances of brain stimulation or signal conditioners (amplifiers, filters) and signal telemeters for instances of brain recording. (B) The tissue response around the electrode(s) can result from passive mechanical or chemical factors, from activity dependent changes in the excitability of neurons, and/or from the products of electrochemical products at the electrode–tissue interface, and can lead to changes in device functionality.

There are three principal nociceptors: (1) Aδ mechanical nociceptors, which respond to noxious mechanical stimuli that damage or threaten to damage tissue; (2) C-polymodal nociceptors, which respond to noxious mechanical, noxious thermal (>44°C), and noxious chemical stimuli; and (3) silent (or sleeping) nociceptors, which do not respond to acute noxious stimulation of uninjured tissue but become active after tissue is injured. Information from nociceptors is conveyed by sensory axons, whose cell bodies are in the dorsal root ganglion, to the spinal cord where they synapse onto second-order spinal cord neurons, which transmit the information to supraspinal sites (e.g., the thalamus in the brain).
