A simplified energy level diagram for the photoexcitation of a molecule. S₀, S_1, and S₂ represent singlet electronic states of the molecule. Absorption of a photon (depicted by hν) results in the excitation of the absorbing molecule from the ground singlet state, S₀, to the first excited singlet state, S₁. Photochemistry may occur from S₁ directly or from the first triplet excited state, T₁, which is generated after intersystem crossing. The molecule can relax back to the ground state S₀ from either S₁ or T₁ radiatively or nonradiatively. k_nr, k_isc, k_f, and k_p represent rate constants for nonradiative decay, intersystem crossing, fluorescence, and phosphorescence, respectively. In general, with conventional light sources, only S₁ and T₁ are populated. With high-intensity, pulsed irradiation, or with two-wavelength excitation, the upper excited states, such as S₂ and T₂, may also be populated, giving rise to different photochemistry.
