Based on 18s RNA gene sequences, five different clades (I-V) have been defined. Branches that could not be assigned to one of these clades are grouped collectively and named here "PCM group" (for Plectida, Chromadorida, Monhysterida; Schierenberg and Lahl, 2004). With Nematoda as a phylum, four classes are defined by combining suggestions by Malakhov (1994) and De Ley and Blaxter (2002) because such a subdivision fits best our embryological data. Each genus mentioned in this chapter is indicated. Adapted from Blaxter et al. (1998).

Estimates of genome size and chromosome number where taken from: Haemonchus contortus:John Gilleard (pers. comm.) and Leroy et al. (2003); Caenorhabditis elegans: Stein et al. (2003); Pristionchus pacificus: Sommer et al. (1996); clade V nematodes: Blaxter (2000); Meloidogyne hapla: David Bird (pers. comm.); Brugia malayi: Ghedin et al. (2004); Trichinella spiralis: Hammond and Bianco (1992) and Mutafova et al. (1982); other species: Leroy et al. (2003).

One hypothetical scenario for relationships of orders of Nematoda and their general ecological occurrence (modified from Malakhov 1994). Note that multifurcations represent uncertainties in branching arrangements rather than simultaneous speciation events. The classification derived from this evolutionary scenario proposes three subclasses (Malakhov 1994). According to other classification systems, Adenophorea encompasses the subclasses Enoplia and Chromodoria, whereas Secernentea corresponds to Rhabditia. Branching relationships within the Rhabditia do not reflect possible paraphyly, i.e., the Rhabditida may be an artificial group that includes a common ancestor but not all of its descendants. Note also that the scheme does not show the occurrence of several animal parasitic groups in “marine” environments (e.g., there are ascarid parasites in marine vertebrates).
