Figure 5.2—Illustration compares cigarette prices with cigarette sales from 1970 to 2011. In general, as the price of cigarettes declined, the sales of cigarettes increased. For example, the price of cigarettes reached its lowest levels (slightly more than $1.50 per pack) in the early 1980s. Accordingly, sales of cigarettes peaked in 1981 and 1982 at nearly 30 million packs sold. Similarly, when the price of cigarettes peaked at approximately $5.75 per pack in 2011, sales of cigarettes bottomed out at more than 14,000 packs sold.
