Open bars represent open reading frames, which are labeled E or L depending on their position in the early or late region of the genome. The position of reading frame ES is rather variable. This prototype example is derived for bovine papillomavirus type 1. Gene functions that have been mapped for bovine papillomavirus type 1 are listed below the genome. This organization formed a model with which other virus types were compared.
