The ribosome-recycling concept. A function of mRNA circularization could be to facilitate a direct recycling of ribosomes or ribosomal subunits, after termination at the stop codon, back to the 5' region of the same mRNA. So far, this remains a speculative model since we have no direct experimental proof for such a recycling. The concept also suggests a distinction between an initial round of translation when an mRNA molecule is recruited to the translation machinery for the first time (1), and the following ones (2-x).
