Stepwise acyl transfer in peptide synthesis. The initial activation step converts a phosphoanhydride (indicated by bracket 1) into a mixed carboxy-phosphoanhydride (bracket 3). Reaction with tRNA produces a ribose ester (bracket 4), then condensation with another amino acid produces the peptide product (bracket 5). A76 indicates the 3' terminal nucleotide of aminoacyl-tRNA.
