Metimazol

¿Qué es el metimazol?

El metimazol es un medicamento que se ha utilizado para tratar el hipertiroidismo (cuando la glándula tiroides produce demasiada hormona tiroidea) y la enfermedad de Graves (una causa común de hipertiroidismo). El metimazol reduce la cantidad de hormona tiroidea que produce la glándula tiroides. Tapazole® era una marca de metimazol.

En ocasiones, cuando las mujeres descubren de que están embarazadas, piensan en cambiar la forma de tomar sus medicamentos o dejar de tomarlos por completo. Sin embargo, es importante hablar con sus proveedores de atención de salud antes de realizar cambios en la forma en que toma sus medicamentos. Tomo metimazol. ¿Puede hacer que me resulte más difícil quedar embarazada?

No se han realizado estudios para determinar si el metimazol puede dificultar el embarazo. Los trastornos de la tiroides no tratados pueden dificultar el embarazo.

¿Tomar metimazol aumenta la probabilidad de aborto espontáneo?

El aborto espontáneo es común y puede ocurrir en cualquier embarazo por muchas razones diferentes.

Un estudio no encontró un aumento de probabilidades de aborto espontáneo en 241 mujeres que estaban embarazadas y usaron metimazol al comienzo del embarazo. Sin embargo, el hipertiroidismo se ha asociado con un aumento en la probabilidad de aborto espontáneo.

¿Tomar metimazol aumenta la probabilidad de defectos de nacimiento?

Los defectos de nacimiento pueden ocurrir en cualquier embarazo por diferentes razones. De todos los bebés que nacen cada año, aproximadamente 3 de cada 100 (3 %) tendrán un defecto de nacimiento. Analizamos estudios de investigación para intentar comprender si una exposición, como metimazol, podría aumentar la probabilidad de defectos de nacimiento en un embarazo.

Algunos estudios e informes de casos sugieren que podría haber una mayor probabilidad de defectos de nacimiento al tomar metimazol. Se ha sugerido un patrón de defectos de nacimiento relacionados con la exposición al metimazol. Los hallazgos más comunes incluyen aplasia cutis (úlceras en el cuero cabelludo), atresia coanal (estrechamiento de la abertura de los conductos nasales) y atresia esofágica (el tubo que conecta la boca con el estómago no está formado correctamente). También hay estudios e informes de casos que no encontraron un aumento en la probabilidad de defectos de nacimiento cuando se toma metimazol durante el embarazo. Algunos estudios sugieren que la afección médica subyacente (hipertiroidismo) puede jugar un papel en la probabilidad de defectos de nacimiento. En resumen, no hay evidencia suficiente para sugerir que tomar metimazol aumenta claramente el riesgo de defectos de nacimiento por encima del riesgo normal.

¿Tomar metimazol durante el embarazo aumenta la probabilidad de otros problemas relacionados con el embarazo?

Un estudio encontró una mayor probabilidad de parto prematuro (nacimiento antes de la semana 37) y bajo peso al nacer (peso menos de 5 libras y 8 onzas [2500 gramos] al nacer) cuando se utilizó metimazol durante el embarazo. También se ha descubierto que el hipertiroidismo aumenta las probabilidades de parto prematuro, de menor tamaño (pequeño para la edad gestacional) y de bajo peso al nacer.

Tomar medicamentos para reducir los niveles de tiroides, como metimazol, o tener la enfermedad de Graves durante el embarazo puede provocar que los niveles de tiroides sean demasiado bajos o demasiado altos en el feto. Si toma metimazol o si tiene la enfermedad de Graves, informe a los médicos de su bebé para que puedan controlar el nivel de tiroides de su bebé después del parto.

La FDA ha informado que el metimazol puede causar daño hepático o disminuciones graves y potencialmente mortales en los glóbulos blancos en personas que toman este medicamento, incluidas mujeres embarazadas. Existe información limitada sobre si el uso de metimazol durante el embarazo puede causar daño hepático o una disminución de los glóbulos blancos en el feto.

¿Tomar metimazol durante el embarazo afecta el comportamiento futuro o aprendizaje para el niño?

Tres estudios que analizaron a 56 niños (desde preescolares hasta adultos) expuestos a metimazol durante el embarazo no encontraron diferencias en los puntajes de inteligencia en comparación con sus hermanos o hermanas no expuestos u otras personas no expuestas. Los trastornos de la tiroides no tratados durante el embarazo pueden aumentar el riesgo de problemas de aprendizaje en los niños.

Lactancia materna mientras toma metimazol:

El metimazol pasa a la leche materna. En tres series de casos que incluyeron 56 bebés y un estudio que incluyó 51 bebés, el metimazol en dosis de hasta 20 mg por día no afectó la función tiroidea ni el desarrollo intelectual de los bebés amamantados. Asegúrese de hablar con su proveedor de atención de salud acerca de todas sus preguntas sobre la lactancia materna.

Si un hombre toma metimazol, ¿podría afectar la fertilidad o aumentar la probabilidad de defectos de nacimiento?

No se han realizado estudios para determinar si el metimazol podría afectar la fertilidad de un hombre (la capacidad de embarazar a una mujer) o aumentar las probabilidades de defectos de nacimiento por encima del riesgo basal.
