Examples of trans-acting dosage effects. A positive dosage effect is illustrated by the response of the cox2 gene to the dosage of the long arm of chromosome 5 (5L) in maize. A negative dosage effect is shown by the response of the cox5b gene to the dosage of 1L. The mRNA level in each case was determined relative to the ribosomal RNA used as a Northern loading control. The source of the RNA was the embryo of maize kernels. Modified from Auger et al. (2001).
