Conclusion

The past 10 years has seen a resurgence of interest for the study of the induction and development of vertebrate cranial placodes. This has led to significant progress facilitated by the characterization of a large repertoire of genes expressed at various stages of placode development. It is now well accepted that all cranial placodes arise initially from a common pre-placodal region, which signify that all cranial placode may have a common developmental history, and may employ similar developmental mechanisms. This is exemplified by the finding that cranial placodes initially share the same ground state, a lens fate, which represents the simplest form of all placodes. Later in development and under the influence of local signals, placode precursors become progressively divided into a number of primordia with different identities from which individual placodes will develop and differentiate. An important area of investigation for the future is to determine the exact nature and sequence of the inductive signals involved in placode specification and diversification. The information available on the repertoire of transcription factors expressed in the pre-placodal ectoderm and its derivatives has been growing very rapidly in the last few years. However, future work using high throughput screens will be needed to uncover additional players in this regulatory network in order to fully understand the mechanisms by which they act to regulate placode development.
