Lymphatic microvessel contraction. Light microscope images show a contractile lymphatic microvessel undergoing peristaltic dilation (left panel) or contraction (right panel), driving lymphatic flow away from the tissue interstitium and toward the lymph nodes. A blood microvessel is also shown, parallel and adjacent to the lymphatic microvessel. Fatty tissue outside the vessel is seen at the top of each image.
