18842771 Bortolotti 2008 Study was a RCT crossover design in which 5 subjects received placebo and 5 received Ca for 5 wks. This was followed by a 10-week washout period before the 2 nd intervention period. Total study length was therefore 20 weeks. After 4 weeks of each intervention period, either 500 mg lactose or 300 mg slow-release caffeine was administered. After the 5 th week, the lactose or caffeine, whichever was not administered a week prior, was administered. This was done to explore possible synergistic effects between Ca and caffeine as far as energy expenditure and lipid oxidation.
