Focal seizures

An epileptic seizure that originates from one part of the brain. Symptoms depend on which part of the brain is affected. Typically, one part of the body or one side of the body will develop convulsive movements. Focal (or partial) seizures can also include sensory disturbances, such as smelling or hearing things that are not there. In an uncomplicated focal seizure, consciousness is not lost. However, focal seizures can progress to involve the whole brain in a generalised seizure in which consciousness will be lost.
