Chemical structures of melanin and PEDOT. Note that both molecules share a conjugated molecular backbone, and they have oxygen atoms pendent to the backbone that in PEDOT are known to donate electrical charge and improve the electrical properties and chemical stability. Both polymers are efficient absorbers of light, leading to dark brown (melanin) or dark blue–black appearances (PEDOT).
