Biochemical steps for nucleotide excision repair of CPDs in DNA prokaryotes showing biochemical details of events represented schematically in Figure 15.4. The XPA binds to photoproducts and excision occurs when UV-specific endonucleases make an incision on the 5' and 3' sides. Excision and subsequent polymerization releases a 29-base oligonucleotide containing the CPD.
