Clonal selection during B-lymphocyte maturation. Immature B lymphocytes (top of figure) express their antibodies on the surface as membrane-bound molecules. If a lymphocyte binds its cognate antigen (x), it receives a maturation signal. For full maturation, additional cytokines and costimulatory signals are required. These are provided by a T-helper lymphocyte with specificity for the same antigen after processing and presentation by the B lymphocyte.
