This cartoon describes how Gleevec works at the enzyme responsible for CML, an abnormal tyrosine kinase, which binds ATP. The cartoon on the left portrays the binding of ATP to this CML enzyme, which triggers cellular processes leading to carcinogenic transformation, resulting in CML. In the cartoon on the right, Gleevec has bound to the ATP site, blocking ATP activation of the enzyme, causing both cell death and inhibition of CML transformation.
