Composition of normal goldfish optic nerve as revealed by EM. Axons are myelinated and appear in transverse and longitudinal profiles due to the sinusoidal pattern of the fibers. Astrocyte processes (→), joined by desmosomes, arrange the fibers into bundles. Astrocytes also form a continuous limiting membrane (L) that excludes the septae contents from the interior of the CNS tissue.
