Transcription of the fushi tarazu gene in the Drosophila embryo. (A-D) At the beginning of cycle 14, there is low-level transcription of ftz in each of the nuclei in the segmented region of the embryo. Within the next 30 minutes, the expression pattern alters as ftz transcription is enhanced in certain regions (which form stripes) and repressed in the interstripe regions. (E) Double labeling of the even-skipped (blue bands) and fushi tarazu (brown bands) transcripts, showing that ftz is expressed between the eve bands at this stage.
