The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) originated in the Middle East and spread, along with agriculture, to most of Eurasia and parts of North Africa. Since the mid-19th century, it has reached most of the world, chiefly due to deliberate introductions (from Wikipedia entry). This sample of a female was collected from the remote Faroe Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, by Gabriel David of Uppsala University, Sweden and Eydfinn Magnussen of University of Faroe Islands, and used to generate a high-quality reference genome for the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA), Darwin Tree of Life (DToL), and Vertebrate Genomes Projects.
