The differential gene expression of Microcystis and other cyanobacteria was assessed using whole transcriptome sequencing of microbial populations to assess how different bloom species respond to environmental signals and gain a competitive edge though the simultaneous upregulation of different genes which have strong implications for dominance and bloom severity.
