The University of Cincinnati, the University of Georgia, and the University of Kentucky sequenced the genome of Pneumocystis carinii using shotgun sequencing.

In addition, the Sanger Institute carried out a complementary effort to sequence the telomeres of Pneumocystis carinii chromosomes.
