Geobacter sulfurreducens strain PCA. This strain was isolated from surface sediments of a hydrocarbon-contaminated ditch in Norman, Oklahoma. It oxidizes acetate to carbon dioxide and water while reducing compounds such as sulfur, fumarate, and various metals such as iron oxides (Fe(III)). Contains a large number of cytochrome c-type oxidases which contribute to the flexibility of this organism's electron transport network. Some of these proteins are important intermediates in electron transfer to the insoluble iron (III) oxides. This organism also contains chemotaxis and flagellar genes, suggesting it may become motile like Geobacter metallireducens.
