Microbial biomass was obtained within the outflow channel (80-82 deg C) of a high-pH (7.8), highly sulfidic, geothermal stream (0.3 m width) located northeast of the Calcite Springs Overlook, YNP (44° 54' 17.46" N. Lat, 110° 24' 14.5" W. Lon) on August 10, 2006. The black microbial streamer communities contain pyrite-like phases (FeS, FeS2), which form as encrustations around microbial rods and filaments. The site was included in the study to focus on metabolic attributes of community members under high pH, high-sulfide conditions, especially members of the deeply rooted bacterial order, Aquificales.
