More...When cultured in the light with glucose, Symbiodinium SSB01 cells lost pigmentation and photosynthetic activities, as indicated by decreased FV/FM and PSI P700. But the cells were healthy and grew rapidly. When the bleached culture was moved into medium without glucose, the cells rapidly regained their pigmentation and photosynthetic activity. We are currently using RNA-Seq to characterize gene expression in SSB01 during the bleaching and recovery process. Our study will provide an entry point for elucidation of mechanisms associated with the biogenesis of the photosynthetic apparatus in dinoflagellates, and give some insights into mechanisms of bleaching phenomena.
