The goal of the model organism ENCyclopedia Of DNA Elements (modENCODE) Project is to identify all of the sequence-based functional elements in the Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster genomes.
The project makes use of computational and experimental methods to define funtional elements in the D. melanogaster and C. elegans genomes. Putative functional elements identified can be biologically validated using methods that cannot be applied in humans. The dataset resulting from this project is expected to provide insights into the biology of D. melanogaster and C. elegans as well as other organisms, including humans.
