More...By screening of more than 450 squirrels by PCR and serology eleven animals were found to be infected with variegated squirrel 1 bornavirus. Infected animals belonged to two Sciuridae subfamilies and originated from Germany and the Netherlands. Whole virus genome analysis demonstrated close similarity to the prototype virus, and showed little and host-independent nucleotide sequence variation.
