Fecal microbial characterization of hospitalized patients with suspected infectious diarrhea shows significant dysbiosis

Using 16S sequencing (16S-seq), we aimed to characterize the microbiota of fecal samples from 196 hospitalized Israeli patients with suspected infectious diarrhea (58% males, mean age 41 years [range 1-91]) and compare those to healthy, non-hospitalized subjects (n=1394 from Israel, the United States (US), Malawi, and the Amazonas of Venezuela in publicly available datasets), and traditional culture results
