We leveraged a nonhuman primate model where rhesus macaques voluntarily self-administer various amounts of 4% ethanol in water and performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing on duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and colon biopsies collected after 12 months of chronic ethanol consumption to better understand how alcohol use disorder (AUD) disrupts the GI mucosal barrier, resulting in increased intestinal permeability, nutrient malabsorption, and increased risk of colorectal cancer.
