Applying environmental transcriptomics and other methods to a natural bloom of Mesodinium rubrum revealed an unsuspected relationship, “Mesodinium farming Teleaulax”, in which the host helped transporting nutrients from the environment, promoted symbiont cell proliferation, and benefited from the symbiont’s photosynthesis.
