Diatom genome data will be used in forensic investigations of deaths presumed to be caused by drowning. Presence of diatoms in the lungs of bodies removed from water will allow a determination of whether or not the victim was alive at the time of submersion, or alternately died elsewhere and was disposed of in the water afterwards.
