More... N. tabacum has a large genome of about 4500 Mbp and is an allotetraploid with 2n = 48 chromosomes. According to
Kawashima et al.,
N. tabacum has arisen from a cross between
N. sylvestris (2n=24) and
N. tomentosiformis (2n=24). SSR markers were developed. Of 684 primer pairs 637 exhibited variation between the Hicks Broad Leaf and the Red Russian varieties. These two were used to generate a mapping population of 182 F
2 individuals.
