More...The emergence and spread of resistance to antimalarial drugs has been and continues to be a significant challenge in the fight against malaria. The goal of this study was to compare Sanger sequencing and next generation sequencing (NGS) for a previously-reported and well-characterized case of malarone treatment failure in a U.S. patient with malaria. Here, we illustrate the utility of using NGS for early detection of a critical mutation associated with antimalarial drug (Malarone) treatment failure. In contrast, Sanger sequencing failed to detect the same mutation as early as NGS.
