More...Here we describe the small intestinal microbiome in a cystic fibrosis mouse model, treated or untreated with streptomycin. We used 454 pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene of small intestinal content from 12 week old female BALB/c Cftrtm1UNC mice and aged and sex matched wild-type littermates, to characterize the community membership. For the streptomycin treated groups, experimental mice and their direct progenitors were maintained on streptomycin (200mg/L) in their drinking water. We detected microbial dysbiosis between untreated cystic fibrosis and wild-type mice, which was altered with streptomycin treatment. This resulted in an altered pulmonary T cell profile and reduce airway hyperresponsiveness in cystic fibrosis mice
