Clostridium sticklandii DSM 519. This Clostridium (HF strain, ATCC 12662) was initially found associated with Methanococcus vannieli in formate-enriched cultures (Stadtman and Barker, 1951). After its isolation in pure culture, it was shown that this organism is capable of fermenting amino acids (Stadtman, 1954). Biochemical studies have shown that C. sticklandii obtains energy for growth from oxidation-reduction reactions between specific amino acid pairs (Stickland reaction, described in C. sporogenes (Stickland, 1934). This is the type strain and the sequencing and analysis of this bacterium will lead to a better understanding of the fermentation process. Less...
