Vitamin D deficiency is associated with muscle weakness and myopathy. To assess the mechanisms by which 1α,25(OH)2D3 alters skeletal muscle function, we determined whether 1α,25(OH)2D3 alters the rate of muscle oxygen consumption (OCR), and whether alterations in mitochondrial function are dependent on the expression of the vitamin D receptor (VDR).
