This strain is an enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) that produces F18 pilus adhesins that are responsible for adherence in an age-related manner to weaned pigs due to the presence of intestinal receptors. Enterotoxins include heat labile enterotoxin and heat stable enterotoxins.
