Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida. Formerly Pasteurella piscicida, this organism was classified as Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida based on genetic and phenotypic analysis. Photobacterium damselae subsp piscicida was first identified as the causative agent of bacterial infections in fish during a disease outbreak in white perch and striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay. This organism is highly pathogenic for a wide variety of marine fish. Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida infection has significant economic impact on aquaculture particularly in Japan, where it infects yellowtail and in the Mediterranean area where it infects farmed seabream and seabass.
