BCM-HGSC has directed the Rat Genome Sequencing Consortium, contributed to the Mouse Genome Sequencing Consortiums finishing project, is improving the genome sequence of the kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordii), and is undertaking projects to provide a reference genome and comparative genome sequences for the deer mouse (Peromyscus manipulatus bairdii), white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus), california mouse (Peromyscus californicus), and the oldfield mouse (Peromyscus polionotus). These rodent genomes will be used to understand differences between wild and captive rodents and to study differences among these species that contribute to differences in their biology. Among mammals, rodents are a close outgroup to the primates and as such are an accessible study population to understand human biology.
