More...Agricultural soils manured with the waste from medicated animals will received antibiotic residues if they are excreted by animals. In a long-term [14 year] field experiment evaluating the impact of antibiotic residues on soil biology, a series of plots received annual applications of environmentally relevant concentrations of veterinary antibiotics. A Microbacterium sp. able to metabolize and grow at the expense of sulfamethazine and other sulfonamide antibiotics was isolated from antibiotic-treated soil.
