Virion Properties
Morphology
Virions consist of a
capsid. Virus capsid is not enveloped, round with icosahedral
symmetry. The nucleocapsid is isometric and has a diameter of
30-35 nm. The capsid consists of 12 capsomers. Virus preparations
contain more than one particle component.
Incomplete particles are common. They are devoid of nucleic
acid characterized by capsids with dark centers in negative stain
preparations.
Nucleic Acid
The Mr of the genome constitutes 9% of the virion by
weight, or 16% of the virion by weight, or 25% of the virion by
weight. The genome is segmented; multipartite and segments are
distributed over several particles of varying size, depending on
the length of the genome enclosed. The genome consists of two
segments of, or three segments of, or four segments of linear,
double -stranded RNA. Minor species of non-genomic nucleic acid
are also found in virions. The encapsidated nucleic acid is
mainly of genomic origin, but virions may also contain subgenomic
RNA, or satellite RNA. The complete genome is 3000-10000
nucleotides long. Genome is sequenced, but only an estimate is
available, complete sequence is 1300-2200 nucleotides long.
Is sequenced, complete sequence is about 1500-2200
nucleotides long, is sequenced, but only an estimate is given,
complete sequence is 600-1500 nucleotides long (defective or
subgenomic RNA). The multipartite genome is divided among more
than one type of particle and the segments are distributed
between at least 2-7 different types of particles (containing
either a single molecule of dsRNA (L1, L2), or single molecule of
ssRNA corresponding to the plus-strand (M1; M2) and a single
molecule of dsRNA with ssRNA tails (H), or one molecule of dsRNA
and ssRNA (H), or two molecules of dsRNA (P)). Populations of
mature viruses contain particles with a single molecule of dsRNA
(L1, L2), or a single molecule of ssRNA corresponding to the
plus-strand (M1; M2) and a single molecule of dsRNA with ssRNA
tails (H), or one molecule each of dsRNA and ssRNA (H), or two
molecules of dsRNA (P). Each virion contains defective
interfering copies.
Proteins
The viral genome encodes structural
proteins. Virions consist of 1 structural protein(s).
